Editorial: Tribune endorses Zacarias for state Assembly seat Democrat

Democrat has a more clearly defined vision than Achadjian Katcho

Katcho Achadjian and Hilda Zacarias have commendable records of public service, along with well-deserved reputations for their hard work, responsiveness and accessibility. Their campaigns have been models of graciousness — both pledged not to engage in nasty attack ads — and we hope the successful candidate can carry that tone of civility to Sacramento.

Choosing one candidate over the other was not easy. We have endorsed Achadjian in the past, and while we haven’t always agreed with his decisions, we continue to believe that he has been a strong supervisor. In the final analysis, though, we found Zacarias to be the better fit for the state Assembly. She is the more moderate of the two, and we believe she will be better able to balance the need for economic recovery while maintaining the environmental protections so vital to the Central Coast.

Hilda Zacarias is the hands down choice for State Assembly

Hilda Zacarias is the hands down choice for election as this area's representative in the State Assembly on November 2, mainly because she is absolutely clear on the critical issues that San Luis Obispo County and the northern part of Santa Barbara County, which make up the 33rd District, face and how California's budget crisis can be attacked to bring renewed hope for the future of the state's 37 million children and adults.

She is as straight as an arrow in telling where she stands on each and every issue. You name it, and she will tell you not only what she thinks but what she intends to do about it as a member of the Assembly. That's almost never heard of in politics at any level, except for John Laird, who was defeated for state Senate from this area on August 17. Why is she like that? One key reason is she is a trained, experienced accountant who deals in concrete facts and numbers.  Because Sam Blakeslee was elected to that Senate seat, electing Zacarias to the Assembly is even more important so that this area will have at least one true voice in Sacramento.

Work from Within

The Tribune – Letter to the Editor, Published 09/01/2010

I'm often asked what the State Assembly does or why the Legislature matters. In fact, our lives are affected every day by decisions made in Sacramento. The "borrowing" of dollars from our governments, the inability to fashion a budget that reflects the values of our state and the bureaucratic burdens that impact the ability of businesses and schools to thrive all have grave consequences.

Santa Maria Councilmember Hilda Zacarias Campaigns in Hope Ranch

Hilda Zacarias, the Democrats’ 33rd Assembly District candidate, spoke to a group of more than 40 people in the Hope Ranch home of former county supervisor Susan Rose this past Sunday.

The afternoon garden party, attended by Mayor Helene Schneider, Rep. Lois Capps, Assemblymember Pedro Nava, and others, generated donations to fund Zacarias’s campaign. She’s running against Republican candidate Katcho Achadjian of San Luis Obispo.

“I’m grateful to have an opponent who is sane enough and different enough to give people a real choice,” Zacarias told the party’s attendees.

Hilda's Campaign 'Code of Ethics' Gets Attention from The Tribune

Here's a couple quotes and a link to the article on the Tribune's website:

I refer you to Zacarias’ code of ethics. Candidates and their supporters should not engage in any practice “that tends to corrupt or undermine our American system of free elections, or that hampers or prevents the full and free expression of the will of the voters.”

Maybe we have to start with small steps, like Zacarias’ code of ethics. “We as candidates can play a very direct role in our own campaigns,” she wrote.

Hilda Zacarias Challenges Opponents to Join Effort to Save $6 Million

Accountant Hilda Zacarias Challenges Opponents to Join Effort to Save $6 Million for Taxpayers -Says state is kicking US military personnel "in the teeth" and "making taxpayers foot the bill"-- Santa Maria, CA-- Hilda Zacarias today called upon all candidates for the 33rd State Assembly District to officially support our military personnel serving overseas by calling for a November election for the State Senate seat recently vacated by Lieutenant Governor Abel Maldonado. According to Paul Macintosh, Executive Director of the California State Assn. of Counties, the state's efforts to force a costly special election just months before a regular election will also disenfranchise military and overseas voters. US Military personnel will not be able to vote in this election because their ballots will not be received in time to be counted.
